Creating Appliqué on Garmeo

An appliqué is any piece of fabric that is applied to another piece of fabric either through stitching or another method like iron-on adhesive. In embroidery, an appliqué refers to a piece of fabric that is stitched onto your garment. Appliqué should be used in instances where you would like for there to be fabric in the background or fill of your design, rather than thread. You can use appliqué when embroidering shapes on clothing and hats, or numbers on the back of a jersey. In many cases, this could reduce the stitch count and price of your garment.

Tips for Creating Appliqué on Garmeo

Tips for Creating Appliqué on Garmeo

Garmeo has four preset appliqué fabric shapes to choose from: square, oval, circle and rectangle. When you select appliqué, your design will be embroidered within the preset margins you selected.

Choosing a Stitch Type and Color

Garmeo has different stitch types to help give your garment the look you want. When applying appliqué, choose a satin stitch for a full-bordered finish. If you want some fabric poking out of the sides to give your garment a more casual look, choose a straight stitch border.

Choosing a Fabric

Garmeo has four preset fabric types to choose from: felt, twill, cotton and fleece. The background of your design will appear in the fabric you chose. For best quality, choose a fabric type that best matches your garment. For instance, if embroidering appliqué on a denim jacket, it’s best to choose thicker fabric like felt, rather than cotton.

Choosing Fabric and Stitch Colors

Keep in mind the color of your fabric will be the color of your background. If you want the background to contrast from the garment, use a different color. If you want it to blend in, use the same color. The sample applies to the stitch color you select.

Some Examples of Designs That Translate Well to Embroidery

Hats

Instead of using thread as a background, you can apply fabric to hats to reduce the amount of stitches in the background. With Garmeo, you can create a distressed look by choosing twill fabric and a straight stitch to apply the fabric.

Children’s Apparel

Appliqué is popular choice when you’d like to decorate children’s apparel with colored fabrics. You can order appliqué on children’s apparel like bibs and onesies.

T-Shirts

Because appliqué uses fabric rather than thread as a fill, appliqué is a great choice for large designs on lightweight garments such as t-shirts, which are prone to being weighed down by many stitches.

Totes

Using appliqué, you can embroider large designs on totes and luggage without increasing stitch count.
